Frequently Asked Questions

(FAQs)

1. How much were our union dues in 2011?

For income tax purposes, the 2011 calendar-year dues were $763.84 if you were a full-time teacher from January through December. If you had dues deducted for only a portion of 2011, your total dues deduction is listed on your last pay stub in December, 2011.

2. Are there any scholarships that my child can apply for if he/she is a graduating high school senior?

The Long Island Teachers Benevolent Fund awards scholarships ($250 to $500) to children of members of NYSUT locals that participate in the Long Island Teachers Benevolent Fund (and BTA does). Applications are available in early February and are due sometime in March each year. You can obtain an application from the BTA Office or your Chief Delegate.

If your child is a graduating senior from Brentwood High School , scholarships are available through the Guidance Office each year. The deadline for 2010 applicants is early March. (Check the application for the exact date.)

3. I'm planning to take a leave of absence.  How do I begin the process?

If you are planning to take any type of leave of absence that involves non-payment of salary, please contact one of your BTA delegates and the BTA Office so that a personal meeting can be arranged to explain the options and ramifications of a non-paid leave.
